The License

Chief among them is the procurement of the marriage license itself. As personal and unique and special as your wedding will be, it is after all, a legal institution recognized by society and the civil government which rules it. You can’t get married without the “blessing” of society delivered in the guise of your wedding license.
Here are some reminders.
- States and counties have slightly different rules, so call or visit your city hall to be sure you know all the details of the legal requirements. Information about licenses in Shawnee County
- Don’t wait until the last minute to contact your county. Licenses take 3 businesses days to obtain. Licenses also have expiration dates so keep that in mind. In Kansas, the range is 6 months from issue date.
- If you have been married before, you may be expected to bring proof that your previous marriage was legally ended. This can be done with either a divorce degree or death certificate.
- Be prepared to pay for the license that day. In Shawnee county, the fee is $50 but fees can be as much as $100 depending on your location.
